Sports and Fitness in 2007

thumb_j0402381.jpgHow are you doing with that New Year’s resolution to finally get in shape?  Are bad weather and slow progress weighing you down?  Or maybe you’re stuck in a routine that just isn’t working for you?

Change up your routine and combat the winter “blahs”.  Trying something you haven't done before, or finding the company and encouragement of friends, might be just what you need to keep yourself motivated!  For indoor sports, you might try roller skating, bowling, or martial arts

Get your blood pumping with a good workout!  Yakima’s YMCA has and indoor and outdoor pool, gym, fitness center, free weight room, aerobics and dance studio, youth gym, handball/racquetball courts, indoor running track, course ropes challenge course, sauna/steam room, and a whirlpool.  You can sign up for classes, or just work out on your own.  There’s even childcare available!  Or, check out Yakima’s many other fine gyms and health clubs, many of which also have classes, special programs, and childcare.  thumb_j0227636.jpg

There’s even more to do outdoors!  The Yakima Greenway has ten miles of paved pathway which often runs alongside the scenic Naches or Yakima River or through the Arboretum.  There are three parks, two fishing lakes, and four river access landings along the Greenway, which is free and open to the public year 'round from dawn until dusk.  Walking, biking, or roller blading is something the whole family can do together - and don't forget to bring the dogs along - they love to get out too!

There are many sports clubs and organizations in Yakima for enthusiasts of everything from archery to snowmobiling – see our listings for more details.  For information about local team sports, check out the website of the Yakima Valley Sports Commission.

thumb_j0262407.jpgAs summer approaches we can look forward to river rafting, fishing, camping, hiking, and all sorts of outdoor activities in the mountains and rivers surrounding the Yakima Valley.  Get in shape now so that you’ll be ready to try a new sport or activity this summer!
