More about the Central WA State Fairgrounds
Sundome: The largest free standing concrete dome in the world, the 85,000 square foot Yakima Sundome is a year-round entertainment and sports venue. During the fair it is the site of commercial exhibits. The Sundome is THE place to get saltwater taffy, beef jerky, cool samples and information from local businesses, and all your favorite fair gadgets and special sales.
Pioneer Hall: This smaller building (8,000 square feet) near the Sundome houses different exhibits each year, often including children's activities.
Modern Living Building: Built in 1938 and recently remodeled, the 16,000 square foot Modern Living building is the site of arts and crafts exhibits, quilts, and food exhibits. 4-H exhibits and presentations are also made in this building.
Agriculture Building: Built in 1893, the "Ag" Building is the oldest building on the fairgrounds. This landmark building holds all the grange and agricultural exhibits, as well as photography, drawings, paintings, and other mixed media art (upstairs). It has that wonderful "old barn" feel, with a faint aroma of hops. Watch a wool spinning demonstration, get a famous "Wonder Bar" ice cream cone, or even participate in some wine tasting.
Barns: Located on the South side of the fairgrounds, the barns hold horses, cows, goats, sheep, and other livestock. Take a tour to see all the hard work people have put into preparing their animals for the fair. As a general rule, 4-H competition takes place during the first half of the fair, and open competition during the second half, although there is some overlap. 4-H exhibitors are judged on herdsmanship - how well they maintain their area of the barn, their animals, and their animals' stalls or pens - as well as in arena competition. 4-H clubs design the decorations for their stalls, so check out all their hard work and pick your favorite!
Durand Arena: Take a seat in the stands (find some shade, if you can) and watch youth and adults show their horses. Classes fall into four general categories:
- Halter, in which the horses are being judged on their physical perfection
- Showmanship, in which the exhibitor is being judged on how well they have prepared their horse (cleanliness, appearance) and on how well they can lead their horse through a pattern
- Pleasure - riding classes in which the horse is judged on its performance and whether it is a pleasure to ride
- Equitation - riding classes in which the rider is judged on their riding ability and form, including their ability to guide their horse through a pattern
Other classes include trail, in which the horse and rider must navigate an obstacle course; reining, in which horse and rider must complete a complex pattern, and jumping, in which horse and rider must go over a series of jumps as fast as possible.
Other animals are also shown in Durand Arena, and demonstrations also take place here, usually in the evening.
The Valley Building & Rabbit Barn: Located north of Durand Arena, the Valley Building and the rabbit barn house more animal exhibits, including 4-H cats (first half), 4-H dogs (second half), a petting zoo and hands on activities for kids. Rabbits show during the first half of the fair, and chickens during the second half of the fair. Take a stroll through these barns and prepare to be amazed at how many different kinds of rabbits and chickens there are!
The Sundola: The Sundola is a chairlift ride that goes from one end of the fairgrounds to the other. You can buy one way or round trip tickets. Riding the Sundola is a relaxing way to get a bird's eye view of the entire fairgrounds. Food and
Rides & Food: What would any fair be without delicious, greasy fair food and carnival rides! Some perennial CWSF food favorites include the Young Life BBQ Booth, Lamb Burgers, and "Wonder Bars" ice cream. Before you eat too much food, take a spin on a few rides. The CWSF has no permanently installed rides like a roller coaster, but a few of the latest dizzying new attractions, as well as some of your old faithful favorites, are sure to be at the fair this year! Wristbands that will get you unlimited rides all day long (except the Sundola) cost $25 Tues-Fri, and $30 Sat/Sun/Mon. Tickets can also be purchased individually or in booklets. Most rides require at least 4 tickets.
